Sound of SoHo Square
SoHo Square, acrylic on canvas, 60 x 60cm
‘What struck me about it was that it looked very much like the sort of pattern I create when I'm scoring a drum/percussion part. The piece 'sounded' to me just like a Bossa Nova rhythm, I could actually hear the rhythm as I scanned the picture from left to right, with the vertical black bar on the left looking just like a bar line.’ Karl Greenow, on seeing SoHo Square at a recent exhibition
Since then Karl has composed a short piece of music, He also made a grid of the drum score for the specific rhythm and has expressed it in a similar way to my painting; a bit like John Cage but in reverse. (He overlaid star charts on manuscript paper and used the positions to denote musical notes.)
